  1. Sex ratio is used to describe the number of females per 1000 males. In the Population Census of 2011,it was revealed that the population ratio of India was 940 females per 1000 of males very was considerably a low sex ratio of females, if connotes in the right context. On the other hand,Meghalaya is basically following the Matriarchal Society where women folks have a larger role in the Socio- Economic dynamics of the state and are great stake-holders in the functioning of household( domestic) and professional activities. As per the official census of 2011, East Khasi Hills District had a population of 8,25,922 of which 4,10,729 were males and 4,15,177 were females. The sex ratio was 1011:1000 females: males in the District.

Meghalaya is a state that follows and practice the old system since our fore- fathers, which is being a Matrilinial society. It is a not a Matriarchal society ,if I may make it clear. The reasons for good and poor performance in terms of sex ratio depends on each family. Just to generalized some of the reasons would be
    1. Due to illiteracy, mostly in the rural areas, people are not aware about the power and role of women in today's Era.
    2. Poverty is also one of the important factors which is responsible for the declining sex ratio.
    3. Lack of empowerment of women especially in rural areas.
Otherwise in our state, both male and female get opportunities in all spheres of life, be it right from upbringing to education.

  69. According to the vital statistics of India based on the Civil Registration system (CRS). Even as Meghalaya recorded a sex ratio of 942 per thousand male, the matrilineal system in the State laid down by the ancestors has ensured a stable and elevated status of the females in the society. This has resulted in gender equality where females are given equal status and rights, and opportunities.

The national sex ratio as per the 2011 census stands at 943 females per 1000 males. Meghalaya might be a matrilineal state, perhaps the only one in the world and it may be assumed that it’s performance in gender equality would be good but the reality is that patriarchy, which has always been a part of the culture here, is still seen in various aspects. Taking the Khasi tribe in particular, although more women are emerging as entrepreneurs, administrators and high-ranking officials, etc; they still remain in the back seat when it comes to politics, religion, other cultural practices and the many decision-making aspects. Women are socially restricted by the written and unwritten norms preventing them from leading liberated lives.

  83. In is observed that the sex ratio in Meghalaya, which is 989 females per thousand males, is higher than than the sex ratio at national level which is 943 females per thousand males. In Meghalaya,  East Khasi Hills District, has a high rate of sex ratio where the number of females  is 1011 per thousand males. India's problems of gender imbalance have been observed in the majority of states for long years except in selected few states. This is mainly attributed to the age-old customs and complicated social fabric of Indian society. It very much reflected the dominance of the patriarchy system as well as the prevalence of gender inequality among other associated factors.  Meghalaya being a matrilineal society where inheritance and the lineage is traced from a MOTHER, gender inequality was not a problem. Both males and females are treated as equal.  Whereas, in the rest of India, sons or male are more favored and preferred and sadly daughters are mostly taken as a burden, especially those belonging to the lower strata of the society,  this is due to socio-cultural practices, rigid caste  system including dowry. Females hold a low status in society.  In extreme cases,  women are badly treated, violence on women commonly occurs in many parts of India, cases of abuse on girls or women are often reported though many are unreported due fear and stigma that females had to undergo. Horrifying news on female infanticide or abandon of female child after birth they still exist. All this will lead to a higher mortality rate for females. Such practices are some of the factors that contributes to deepening decline in sex ratio.

  137. The national sex ratio as per the Census data of 2011 stood at 940 females per 1000 males. This disparity is an evidence in itself that there are problems related to gender equality in the country.

This leads to the role of men in the society being undermined, paving the future for men to fail rather than being leaders.
The positives in the long run will crack. The high level of social unrest are created mostly by the men who have been lost due to high dropout rates and high levels of substance abuse in the states, it will only increase as the days go by.
